Your Discord messages May be about to Show Up on Google - What ANZ Servers Need to Know

Discord is busting open the door to the open web - and if you run a big public clan or creator Discord, this one’s for you.

Starting 16 November 2026, eligible servers get a Server Web Page: a public page anyone can see (Discord account or not), and that search engines like Google can index. From mid-December 2026, some messages from public channels can also appear on that page and in web search - in the member’s own words.

Important upfront: this does not apply to every Discord. DMs, group DMs, normal private servers, and most small Community servers stay off Google.

Who this actually hits

Discord has three broad server types. Only the last one is in scope:

Server type

What it is

Google/Web Presence?

Normal / friend server

Invite-only, no Community tools

No

Community server

Invite-only, but with Community tools (rules, onboarding, insights). No big member minimum - you can enable this with a small server

No

Discoverable server

A Community server that meets Discovery rules and opts into Server Discovery

Yes

Discovery requirements include (among other things):

  • At least 1,000 members

  • Server at least 8 weeks old

  • Activity + safety requirements

  • 2FA required for moderation

  • Admins turn Discoverable on

So yes: for most ANZ clan Discords under 1,000 members, this change does not apply. You’re not about to have be generally indexed unless you’ve gone Discoverable.

Can’t find “Web Presence”? Here’s why

Web Presence only shows for Discoverable servers (Server Settings → Community → Web Presence, desktop/browser).

  • If you only see Enable Community - you’re not Community yet.

  • If Community is on but you see Apply for Discovery (and no Web Presence) - you’re Community, not Discoverable yet. That’s normal under 1,000 members.

  • Web Presence appears after you’re Discoverable.

Stay Community + invite-only = stay off this feature.

What’s going live (Discoverable servers only)

1. Server Web Pages (from 16 Nov)
A public “about this server” page. People can check the vibe and join from the web. If admins do nothing, Discord can publish a default page from Server Profile details.

2. Channel Summaries
Short automated summaries of public-channel chat (from mid-Nov onwards). Usernames aren’t shown. Admins choose channels - or turn summaries off.

3. Channel Messages (from mid-Dec, gradual)
Selected public messages can appear on the web page and in search. No usernames or avatars next to them. Admins pick channels; members control whether their messages can appear.

Australia/NZ: the member setting

If your Discord account is set to Australia (also EU/UK/Canada/Brazil/South Korea), Channel Messages is off by default. Your messages won’t hit the web unless you turn that on.

Catch: that switch does not control Channel Summaries. Summaries are admin-controlled. Even with Aussie members opted out of messages, a public channel can still feed a web summary unless the server turns summaries off.

Teens can’t put their messages on the web at all.

What admins should do

Under 1,000 members / not Discoverable:
You’re fine. Nothing to configure for Google. Optional: confirm Access → Discoverable is off (or unavailable).

Already Discoverable (or applying):

  1. Open Server Settings → Community → Web Presence (desktop/browser).

  2. Decide if you want to stay Discoverable - growth vs privacy.

  3. Pick which channels feed summaries and messages. Keep mod/staff/ops channels out.

  4. If unsure, turn summaries and messages off until you’ve thought it through.

  5. Tell members in #announcements before mid-November.

  6. Turning Discoverable off takes the web page down (search engines may lag on removing it).

What members should know

  • Check User Settings → Data & Privacy for Discoverable-channel messages on the web.

  • In AU, you’re off by default - only turn it on if you’re happy being searchable.

  • Turning it off later doesn’t bulk-wipe messages sent while it was on - delete those in Discord if needed.

  • Private servers and DMs aren’t part of this.

Why it still matters for the ANZ scene

The servers that are Discoverable (big clans, big creator hubs, 1,000+) suddenly get free Google discovery - and a bigger reputation surface. A joke in #general can look very different as a search snippet with no context.

That’s where a proper home still matters: a clear story, a verified profile, event info that doesn’t vanish into scrollback. Live chat is great. Owned, moderated pages are still how you look intentional when someone Googles you cold.

Bottom line

Discord isn’t making every clan Discord public overnight. It’s turning Discoverable servers - typically 1,000+ members, opted into Discovery - into something search engines can find.

Small Community servers: you’re not in this.
Big Discoverable servers: set Web Presence before mid-November.

And if you want the ANZ scene findable for the right reasons - clean profile, real story, real invite - that’s exactly the gap we’re building for.
